Tuileries- June 1791- Paris

June 20, 1791
Paris was in a state of chaos when it was discovered that the King and the royal family were missing. There were people crowded around the Tuileries Palace, which is where the King has resided since he was escorted to Paris. As I looked around, the faces of the people covered a vast range of emotions... fear, sadness, shock, panic, and worry. A symphony of whispers emanated from every direction. Soldiers darted around, leaving no stone unturned in their search for the King.


June 21, 1789
News that the King and his family had been found spread like wildfire. However, sadness and fear have melted away. Anger and betrayal were the emotions painted on the faces of the King's subjects. The National Constituent Assembly tried to write-off the event as a thwarted kidnapping, but few were convinced by this narrative...
Summer of 1789
Anxiety weighed heavily on the streets of Paris. Tears flowed through infuriated eyes as the reality of what the King had done became clear. Any chance of a constitutional monarchy had been destroyed. The papers printed following the King's arrest, echoed the thoughts of the people; the monarchy cannot be trusted. The King had abandoned his people in a time of crisis and had been placed under armed guard. Sans-culottes began to arm and organize, determined to erase any sign of lingering loyalty to the crown. Crowds talked openly about the need for a republic...
